Joseph Meens founded the Meens Beer Brewery in 1870 in the hamlet of Thull. The brewery was combined with a farm. Brewing beer and selling the brewers’ grains provided a better income together with farming. Although the year of foundation suggests that ‘Bavarian’ beer, bottom-fermented beer, was brewed from the very beginning, a few high fermentation types were first made and around the turn of the century the brewery switched to Bavarian beer. Until 1960, Alfa beer was only consumed in the local area. Later on, prosperity grew and Alfa beer was available throughout the Netherlands.
Meens Brouwerij – Alfa is the product name, but the brewery is also often called that – is an independent family business. The fourth generation of Meens now runs the largely modernised but traditional company.
Alfa Beer wanted to treat the process water for the rinsing machine/filter chamber/pasteuriser/brew house cooler/ CIP and steam boiler from the source before entering the process. Grünbeck has solved the problem by using water softeners and reverse osmosis systems. Hard water was mixed in at various points in the process in order to supply the required water.
