Production of hydrogen

Ultrapure water is indispensable for the production of hydrogen. For the preparation of this ultrapure water, various high-quality water treatments are necessary. We have all these water treatment technologies in our range.

What is hydrogen and how do we make hydrogen?

Hydrogen is produced with ultrapure water. This water is completely free of salts and has a very low conductivity. The basis is usually drinking water that is treated in three ways. First, a softener removes limescale from the water. Next, an active carbon filter removes the chlorine in the water. Then, using reverse osmosis (RO) and EDI(electro-deionisation), the salts are removed. The steps are shown below.

Water softening is essential. Hard water can cause problems in pipes, fittings and installations.

Mixed bed filter

Om de geleidbaarheid van gedemineraliseerd water te verlagen, ook wel ‘polishing’ genoemd, is een extra nabehandeling van een mixed bed filter nodig. Een alternatief of extra stap voor EDI.


Onze ultraviolet installaties zijn perfect voor het desinfecteren van water. De UV-installatie werkt nog beter in combinatie met bijvoorbeeld een ultrafiltratie.

Optimal adjustment of the water treatment of hydrogen

Before water is split into hydrogen and oxygen, all ions must be removed from the water. Grünbeck has extensive experience in manufacturing and assembling installations that turn water into ion-free, ultrapure water. As a result, we know exactly which application is right for your organisation, situation and process. We are also experienced in polishing water (in partial flow) in the electrolysis units. This is possible up to temperatures of 80°C. Often the recycling flow of hydrogen production is generated via mixed bed cartridges. These remove the impurities and keep the water ultrapure. We connect these techniques mechanically and electrically. In this way, all components communicate with each other so that the entire process is optimally regulated from start to finish. This prevents many breakdowns on site, partly because we always test the combinations before they leave our factory.

Our water treatment installations often start with an industrial water softener. Pipes, fittings and installations last much longer when using a water softener. Choose a Grünbeck system and you’ll also be saving water and resources thanks to its low energy and salt consumption.

De-ironed water is better for the process, extends the life, and reduces malfunctions and defects in basically everything that this water is added to. Our deferrisation installations filter out not only iron, but also manganese and other undesirable odours and substances.

Thanks to its pure nature, demineralised water is ideal for the production of steam, boiler feed water, process water and central heating water. To demineralise water, we use reverse osmosis, or RO for short.

Ultrapure water is created by further purifying or polishing water by means of EDI, also known as electro-deionisation. This sterile water is extremely suitable for high-pressure steam boilers and for the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
